Xavier University (XUB) views research as an activity where our core institutional values are expressed clearly. Doctoral Program Overview

The 'Doctor of Philosophy' (Ph.D.) program, intended to prepare the participants for teaching and research positions both within and outside academia. The participants who complete the program successfully are conferred the designation of “Doctor of Philosophy in ____________, Xavier University Bhubaneswar”. Our Scholars are expected to be specialists in their respective fields and capable of generating new knowledge that contributes to the development of management thinking and practice.
The program draws upon Indian and global experience in doctoral education in management and various related fields. The program is also designed to serve as a venue for nurturing various academic debates concerning research. The program structure includes a significant component of research training, facilitated by both in-house and visiting researchers. Ph.D. Scholars are expected to develop deep understanding in the areas of research selected by them. They also get a structured exposure to a range of management topics, develop various professional skills, and participate in the Institute’s academic activities. The Institute supports participation in academic conferences and publication of one’s work in scholarly media.

DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY (Ph.D.) PROGRAM

Ph.D. scholars are expected to develop deep understanding in the areas of research selected by them. They also get a structured exposure to a range of topics, develop various professional skills, and participate in XUB’s academic life and activities.

  • To prepare students for professional leadership in the respective field of choice.
  • To facilitate research entrepreneurship wherein researchers are encouraged to explore themselves, ask questions, actively seek peers' feedback, build conviction in their ideas with peers in specific and society in general.
  • To make scholarly contributions to XUB's endeavor towards sustainability, Entrepreneurships and Analytics (SEA) by understanding those issues which are fundamental to research enquiry.

DOCTORAL PROGRAMS

The Doctoral Program is designed to prepare students for professional leadership in the field of management, and commerce. The objective of the Ph.D. program is to facilitate research entrepreneurial skills and orientation of doctoral scholars. It is designed to promote the culture of research entrepreneurship wherein researchers are encouraged to explore themselves, ask questions, actively seek peers’ feedback, build conviction broader level Ph.D. Program aims at contributing towards XUB’s endeavour towards Sustainability, Entrepreneurships and Analytics (SEA) by understanding those issues which are fundamental to the research enquiry, and have a linkage with organizations, institutions, economy, society, and environment.

DOCTORAl PROGRAM (FULL-TIME)

Overview:

This program is intended to prepare full-time participants for research and teaching positions both within and outside academia. Our doctoral scholars are expected to be specialists in their respective fields and capable of generating new knowledge and be the great new thinkers for our world.

The scholars are expected to develop deep understanding in the areas of research selected by them. They also get a structured exposure to a range of topics, develop various professional skills, and participate in academic and other activities.

Eligibility:

Candidates need to satisfy the following criteria to be considered eligible for doctoral studies in select schools at Xavier University, Bhubaneswar (XUB) as indicated below. For information on the schools please visit the Xavier University, Bhubaneswar homepage https://xub.edu.in . Candidates not meeting the eligibility criteria need not apply to the school in concern.

School Necessary Qualification for Doctoral Studies: Candidates should have
XSRM Master degree in Rural Management / Rural Development / Social Work.

In all these cases, the applicants also need to secure at least 55% marks in aggregate in the Master’s (or an equivalent) level. In case this score is available on a letter-grade system or grade-point system, the University expects a minimum equivalent of 55% marks in aggregate as per the awarding University’s norms for conversion to a percentage.

How to Apply:

Applicants have to fill up the online application form separately for XUB programs at: www.xub.edu.in Upon successfully filling the online application form and paying the application processing fee, the applicant will receive the confirmation by email.

Selection Process:

Candidates will be shortlisted on the basis of their academic records and SOPs. The shortlisted candidates will be required to appear for Xavier Research Aptitude Test (X-RAT), Subject Test (if applicable), Presentation, and Personal Interview to be held in Bhubaneswar. Details about X-RAT is available separately on our website. The coursework for the selected candidates will commence from June 2020.

X-RAT Guidelines :

Xavier Research Aptitude Test (X-RAT) is a test of some basic skills considered essential for researchers, namely writing ability, verbal ability and comprehension, reasoning, and quantitative aptitude.

Subject Test:

Schools shall be conducting a subject test (for domain candidates only) which the shortlisted candidates may need to appear. Details on the test will be communicated to applicants separately.

Candidate Categories:

The candidates who will be offered admission into the doctoral program will be classified in two categories:

  • Category I (Domain Candidates): These candidates have the requisite domain-level qualification as given in the table below (received within the last 5 years) at the time of admission.
  • Category II (Other Candidates): These candidates are applicants who do not meet the requirements of Domain Candidates as documented below

Duration of the Program:

The Ph.D. students are expected to complete the program in 4 years after doctoral registration (please refer to the table below). It may be extended with due approvals.

  • Category I (Domain Candidates): The first year will be spent on doctoral coursework, and the remaining years for completing subsequent steps leading to the doctoral thesis.
  • Category II (Other Candidates): In the first year, the students will be required to attend the domain-related master level courses that are prescribed by the School Research Committee. The doctoral coursework will commence from 2nd year onwards.

Doctoral Coursework:

The coursework is organized in three phases (Phase-I, Phase-II, Phase-III). The coursework will broadly involve the following courses as given in the table below. Additionally, workshops will be organized as per requirements.

Comprehensive Qualifying Examination:

The Comprehensive qualifying examination will be conducted after the successful completion of doctoral course work. After successful completion of the comprehensive qualifying examination, the student will be allowed to proceed to the Thesis Phase.

Thesis Phase:

This phase will involve working on the thesis proposal till final submission of thesis. The scholar is conferred the title as given below on successful completion of all the requirements of the thesis.

Any extension of time beyond the expected completion duration as noted above will be based on review of progress status of the scholars in concern. Students failing to comply with the program requirements will be de-registered. A student has to meet all the requirements of the Doctoral Program according to prescribed standards and no exemption will be granted for any reason whatsoever.
